The Alliances Françaises in India and Nepal are not just involved in promoting and teaching the French language. They are also a hotbed of cultural activities and provide a platform for both local and international talent. Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad is no exception to this rule and will be hosting the exhibition No.Mad.Land from March 3 to March 10. Featuring the works of Ivan Koschmider, the exhibition consists of a series of evocative paintings of a NoMad who left his home country (Germany) a long time ago in his youth and has been traversing the world since. The artist Ivan Koschmider has been living in the West of Gujarat for the past few years and his artworks will be on sale during the course of the exhibition. Jointly organized by Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad and ZOCA (Zone of Contemporary Arts), this exhibition is symptomatic of the burgeoning contemporary art scene in Ahmedabad.

Ivan Koschmider was born in 1942 in Germany and has studied in Munich and Paris. He has been a part of several solo and group shows since 1972. Known as a mixed media specialist, he has collaborated on several books. The soul of his work is embodied in the dominant black of his paintings. The light of shadows is concentrated to the extent that it almost begins to take shape. Paper is used by Koschmider in hitherto unknown ways to remarkable effect. He grapples and tears with the shades of black till it becomes tangible. The resulting black swaths and white verbal images are equally violent and tender evoking war, desolation, loss, love, people and fields. Ivan currently divides his time between India and the United States.
