Art Speaks at AF Ahmedabad
Much like the other Alliances in the India-Nepal network, Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad is committed to nurturing cultural and artistic initiatives in the region. It is within this framework that Art Speaks – a platform beyond borders of artists and thinkers – was launched. The objective of the platform is to bring artists and audiences together under one roof in order to encourage people to reflect upon various aspects of daily life, arts, and culture.
For the 5th edition of Art Speaks, AF Ahmedabad collaborated with the Vaarso Charitable Trust to bring the French painter Julien Claustre to the city. Julien displayed 33 paintings by him along with digigraphs of huge works that he had done back in Paris. The displayed works drew from different periods in Art history – from Impressionism to Contemporary Art and even Street Art. In doing so, the series showed an evolution in the artist’s personal style in tandem with the history of Art in Europe.
Julien’s musings, as reflected in his work, along with his personal evolution are marked by a fascination with spirituality. He had previously visited the Himalayas during a visit to Nepal at a very tender age. Over time, his interest branched out to Indian culture and he meticulously studied the Bhagvad Gita while growing up. He has imbibed several such inspirations from around the world and integrates them into his artistic repertoire.
Within the framework of Art Speaks, Julien’s exhibition was inaugurated on September 4, 2018 by Anil Relia (a renowned Indian art collector) and Pavan Bakeri (President of AF Ahmedabad). This was followed by an informal talk by the artist wherein he described his artistic journey through the paintings. The exhibition was kept open to the general public for only two days and ended on September 5, 2018.
