Alliance Française de Bombay recently became the first Alliance in the India-Nepal network to incorporate Ev@lang – an online adaptive placement test for determining a candidate’s proficiency in French.

The test has been conceived by the Centre international d’études pédagogiques (CIEP) – a public institution for the French Ministry of National Education which has been the global leader in Foreign Language Certification and Evaluation for over 30 years. It is a member of the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE).

Ev@lang consists of three modules which test the candidate’s Written Comprehension, Oral Comprehension, and Grammatical cum Lexical skills. The three modules can be attempted separately but the result can only be obtained after the successful completion of all three. The duration of the test is dependent on a user’s language skills but never exceeds 35 minutes. The algorithm of the test is adaptive – it analyzes the response pattern for the first set of questions in real-time to select the most suitable second set of questions and so on. Thus, the test becomes progressively easier or more difficult by adapting to each user’s profile.

A video about the test can be found on this link below :

Ev@lang is easy to use and completely online – it can be given on a computer, tablet, or smartphone via this link. The test inherently assesses candidates on the basis of the 6 language proficiency levels outlined by the Common Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The results can help determine a candidate’s fluency before they register for a French course, appear for the DELF/DALF exam, or apply for a job.

Currently available in India via the Alliance Française de Bombay Online Portal, Ev@lang will eventually be introduced in the entire India-Nepal network of Alliances and will replace the old Assessment Tests which were on paper and not eco-friendly.
