An artistic residency allows a creative professional to temporarily stay and work elsewhere by providing an environment which is conducive to creativity. Given its strong commitment to the Arts, Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad recently hosted the Chengdu-based Swiss painter Antonio Wehrli for one such residency from January end to March 2019. During this period, Antonio produced more than 40 artworks on canvas which were collectively displayed in an exhibition called Gravity. The exhibition was opened to the general public in the presence of the Othmar Hardegger, the Consul General of Switzerland in Mumbai, on March 2, 2019.

Antonio’s artworks combine his three passions – travelling, photography, and painting. Initially enamoured by Abstract Art, he eventually decided to visit places which piqued his curiosity, take pictures, and paint over these photos. His technique involves splashing colours over these images and letting gravity take over to create the finished product. It is this part of the process which gives the exhibition its name. The ultimate goal is to capture how people around the world are similar despite their differences. In Gujarat, he clicked over 6,000 photos including the Modhera Sun Temple, Patan Stepwell, and Hollywood Basti. These were juxtaposed with images of famous locations in France and then painted on to create unique site-specific oeuvres.

Antonio is of the opinion that despite globalization, world trade, and the rise in interconnectedness, the human race is more prejudiced than ever before. Through his works, he wants to spread the message of peace, unity, and love. His bright paintings drew large crowds of eager onlookers. The icing on the cake was a monumental work measuring 6m by 8m which adorned the façade of AF Ahmedabad for two weeks.
