LINKFEST 2019 at AF Kathmandu

Within the framework of the 70th Anniversary Celebrations of the Diplomatic Relations between France and Nepal, the 5th Edition of Linkfest was collectively organised by the French Embassy in Nepal, the Nepal Economic Forum, and Alliance Française Katmandou on January 31, 2019 at Hotel Himalaya (Kathmandu). This series of debates is designed to stimulate thinking and get ideas flowing. The theme of this edition of Linkfest was ‘Facing Our Time’ and consisted of a panel discussion on contemporary challenges including climate change, consumption patterns, and conservation. The goal was to highlight the issues that today’s youth would have to tackle to achieve Nepal’s aim of becoming a middle income economy by 2030.

The panel consisted of Arnico Panday (Atmospheric Scientist and Regional Programme Manager of ICIMOD‘s Atmosphere Program), Camille Hanesse (Founder of Cosy Nepal and Promoter of Newari Patrimony), Shiwani Neupane (Journalist, Entrepreneur, Novelist, and Director of Ambe Group), and Shrinkhala Khatiwada (Miss Nepal World 2018 and Goodwill Ambassador of the 70th Anniversary of Bilateral Relations between France and Nepal). The session was moderated by Sujeev Shakya (Chairperson, Nepal Economic Forum).

The opening remarks were by H.E. François Xavier Léger (Ambassador of France to Nepal) and Prabin Rana (Deputy Director, AF Katmandou). Mr. Panday highlighted that switching to cleaner energy consumption and behavior patterns can actually provide new business opportunities. Ms. Hanesse stressed on the importance of incorporating local communities in contemporary tourism-related activities so that they remain stakeholders in these changes. Ms. Neupane focussed on the need to promote a culture of hope in Nepal – a sentiment echoed by Ms. Khatiwada who outlined how Nepali youth are changing the image of the country on international platforms. Mr. Shakya concluded the session by stating the importance of focusing on the strengths of Nepal and optimizing the same. Pauline Vengeon (Director, AF Katmandou) closed the session with a vote of thanks to the panelists and the organizers.
