Within the framework of Francophonie 2019 celebrations, Alliance Française du Bengale piloted a series of three concerts by the Franco-Gabonese singer Tita Nzebi in the Indian Museum (Kolkata | March 16), Hard Rock Café (Kolkata | March 18), and Alliance Française de Lucknow (March 23). In Kolkata, the singer was accompanied by her musicians Serge ANANOU, Ivan RECHARD, and Georges DIEME whilst the performance in Lucknow included Ivan RECHARD, Georges DIEME, and Emmanuel AVEHOUNKPAN. Their perfect synergy, Tita’s unique voice, and her evident pride in her native Nzebi language won her a legion of new fans in India!

Tita’s soundscape deploys percussive flamboyance overlaid with intricate bass patterns that are woven around melodic guitar lines. An engaged musician, her aim is not to become famous but to protect a legacy. Tita’s compositions draw from the ethnic repertoire of Nzebi – a Bantu people from central Africa settled in Gabon. During the course of her studies, Tita moved from Gabon to France and took up singing as a co-curricular necessity. Club gigs and collaborations eventually followed and she began to fall back on her traditions to write her songs. She went on to adopt Nzebi as her artistic title and began telling stories about the customs of her people through her music.

Tita has a unique connection with India – she previously visited Bengal on a 16-day tour in October 2017 wherein she also collaborated with two Bengali folk musicians – Gobinda Das Baul and Titas Sen. The songs she recorded with them found place in her latest album From Kolkata. It is these songs which were performed during her India tour in 2019. The concerts in Kolkata were organised in collaboration with the Consulate General of France in Kolkata, the Consulate of Romania, Hard Rock Café Kolkata, Asian Guitar Federation, Indian Guitar Federation, Calcutta Classical Guitar Society, and Siddha Foundation whilst the performance in Lucknow was in partnership with lebua Lucknow and Pernod Ricard.
