Launched by Alliance Française de Delhi and Kalasetu in December 2016, in[Chorus] continued its ongoing series of musical meetings by organising Shades of Sound – an unusual collaboration between Noé Clerc (accordionist), Ujwal Nagar (Indian Classical Vocalist), and Zaheen Khan (percussionist). After a brief residency in Delhi (March 11-14), the trio captivated audiences through their unique renditions in Delhi (March 15), Chennai (March 17), Bangalore (March 19), and Pune (March 21).

The accordion is an emblematic instrument of the French music tradition – unique in its sound and versatile in style. The instrument’s sonority is close to the Indian harmonium which lends itself beautifully to classical Indian ragas. It  goes without saying that Noé’s deft fingers on the accordion, the rich timber of Ujwal’s voice, and Zaheen’s musings created a series of rare, unusual, and mesmerizing performances! These creations were in collaboration with the Indian Music Class of Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris which is lead by the flute player, teacher, and composer Henri Tournier.

The three musicians admit that the experience of working together was unique. However, the collaborative format worked in their favor as all of them sincerely reacted to each other’s playing and suggestions. For Clerc, incorporating Indian influences into his music was an exciting challenge. Nagar adds that the accordionist adapted wonderfully to the scales and melodies thereby picking up tunes based on Indian ragas. All in all, their performances stand in beautiful testimony to the potential of intercultural collaborations!
