The Gurgaon Center of Alliance Francaise de Delhi recently had the pleasure of hosting the dance recital Daksha on February 16. The event brought together the danseuse Marie Pezelet with Pt. Ghanshyam Sisodia on the Sarangi and Subhasis Sabyasachi Ghosh on the Pakhawaj. The performance was part of a series entitled Engaging with Inequalities and saw Pezelet exploring the ephemeral boundries between binaries – Alter/ Ego; Tradition/ Modernity – through a unique blend of Bharatanatyam (a traditional Indian dance form), Kalaripayat (an ancient martial art form from Kerala), and Butoh (contemporary Japanese dance).

Marie Pezelet performs ‘Daksha’ at AF Gurgaon

Pezelet first came to India 23 years ago as a young theatre artist on an Indo-French Cultural Scholarship. It was around this time that she started learning Kalaripayat. Pezelet’s practice today is centred on playing with binaries – states of sanctity and revolt, completeness and solitude, opportunity and inequality. She treats dance like grammar to merge diverse forms like Bharatnatyam and Butoh in her performative parlance.

The performance continues

The performance Daksha grew organically from Pezelet’s desire to collaborate with Indian artists. She was accompanied by Pandit Sisodia (a ninth-generation sarangi player from the Gwalior gharana) and Subhasis (whose technique has allowed him to build up complex musical textures on the Pakhwaj). The cohesiveness of the trio can be gleaned from the fact that despite the linguistic barriers between them, they were able to create a seamless performance which enthralled the audience. For the performance at Gurgaon, the artists closed the evening with Sangamam – the result of the first collaboration between the trio which will remain etched in the minds of the audience for years to come!
