One Piano. Four Hands! While the network of Alliances Françaises in India is no stranger to unique musical acts, Cziffra Duo’s fresh take on scholarly music inspired from folklore-related themes undoubtedly takes the cake! Comprising of two concert pianists, Ludmilla Guilmault and Jean-Nöel Dubois, the highly-decorated duo has performed in recitals all over the world and is the Gold Medal Winner of the the Cziffra Foundation. Thanks to a series of performances piloted by Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad, the two virtuosos captivated audiences in Ahmedabad (Aug 17), Chennai (Aug 19), Kolkata (Aug 21), Delhi (Aug 23), and Chandigarh (Aug 24).

Ludmilla is a child prodigy who specializes in Liszt. Her extensive repertoire largely includes Romantic Music but she is equally at ease with Modern or Contemporary pieces by Messiaen, Jolivet, Ligeti, Cage, and Yvonne Desportes amongst others. Possessing a natural virtuosity and grand sensibility, Jean-Nöel focused on teaching for the longest time as he had grown weary of concerts. Much to the delight of the public, however, an opportune meeting with Ludmilla made him return to the stage. He remains devoted to pedagogy, training toddlers, and future professionals. In tune with these interests, the two did not hesitate in sharing their musical acumen over a master class for budding musicians organised in Ahmedabad on Aug 16.

For their performances in India, Ludmilla and Jean-Nöel played Brahms’ tunes of the Late Romantic Era and Chopin’s mazurkas along with Polish and Liszt’s Hungarian Rhapsodies. The shows culminated with Satie’s La belle excentrique as an homage to the artist on his 150th birth anniversary and as a means to relive the beautiful 1920s. The audiences were left spellbound by the dexterity of the duo’s 4-Hand technique. Needless to add, their unique take on these pieces transported the spectators to another realm and will be remembered for a long time to come!
