On Tuesday March 20th, at Alliance Française of Hyderabad, Banjara Hills, the Journée de la francophonie, i.e. World Day of French speaking communities was celebrated through the launch of a book by Hyderabadi author Dr.Vithal Rajan, and a painting exhibition by renowned Hyderabadi artist, Laxman Aelay.
A collection of Dr Rajan’s short stories, ‘Les Mangues de Tara‘ (Tara’s Mangoes and other short stories) was published in Quebec in 2011 by the Heuresbleues publishing company. The book is illustrated with four paintings by famous painter Laxman Aelay.

The evening commenced with the lighting of the lamp to inaugurate the exhibition, by Mr.Prashant Lahoti, Mrs.Rama Melkote, Mrs.Daphne de Rebello, Mrs Laxmi Devi Raj, Dr.Vithal Rajan and Mr.Jean-Manuel Duhaut. After a brief introduction of the importance of the day (20 March) in French speaking communities all over the world by Jean-Manuel Duhaut, Director of Alliance Française, Madame Lakshmi Devi Raj, a writer herself, from one of the old families of Hyderabad, released the book ‘Les Mangues de Tara‘ by Dr.Vithal Rajan. Thereafter, extracts of the book were read in French by Madame Nirupama Rastogi, Head of Department of French studies, and in English by Madame Daphne de Rebello, President of Alliance Française of Hyderabad. An enthusiastic audience listened attentively to the lively narration and applaused at the right moments. The short story ‘Sharmaji and the Tiger‘ portrays the Indian bureaucracy humorously. The French translation by Canadian writer Jean Chapdelaine Gagnon renders perfectly the wit of the original.

Journée de la Francophonie was celebrated thus in the city by Alliance Française of Hyderabad, in its new premises in Aurora Colony, Banjara Hills linking Hyderabad and French language- as a Hyderabadi author got his book published in French and not yet in English.
