The Alliances Françaises in India and Nepal are not just centres which teach French. They are also crucial points of contact which offer windows to French cultures in a subcontinent which is not francophone. As such, the Multimedia Libraries of the network serve as little oases – offering resources which enable francophiles to pursue their passion at ease. They also act as informal and communal spaces where learning continues outside the classroom and friendships are born out of shared interests. As such, these Media Centers are an intergral part of the Alliance experience.

In recognition of the far-reaching impact of its very own Multimedia Library, Alliance Française de Chandigarh recently launched a thorough revamp of its médiathèque premises and facilities. The results of this labour of love were available for all to see when the renovated Library was inaugurated on Nov 30, 2017. Mrs. Kirron Kher (Honourable Member of Parliament, Chandigarh) was the Chief Guest for the occasion. Currently, the centre boasts of a collection of over 3,500 documents including books, comics, newspapers, magazines, CDs, DVDs, documentaries and resource material catering to a wide area of interests, for all ages and in multiple languages.

médiathèque must evolve to keep in tune with the needs of a world which is increasingly connected in the digital sphere. Keeping the demands of the techno-savvy generation in mind, AF Chandigarh has added new resources like Playstation4 which incorporate Serious Games – a new breed of video games which enable you to learn French in unusual ways while having fun! The AF Chandigarh médiathèque also houses cutting-edge tablets loaded with stimulating French apps like Dr French, Motdujour, le conjugeur, Duolingo, Merci Professeur, Mr.vocabulaire and jeux pédagogiques (including culturequiz, word crack, etc.) to enable students of all ages to perfect their French in a fun atmosphere. In addition, members can access a vast collection of online resources (magazines, e-newspapers, ebooks, french movies, award winning documentaries etc.) via the digital platform Culturethèque.

To familiarise the public with the available resources, AF Chandigarh will continue organising different activities on a regular basis including the writing club, lecture club, poetry workshop, press workshop, etc. Furthermore, the organisation encourages school visits to the médiathèque so that the little ones can enjoy the multimedia library. A lot of thought went into the renovation to best incorporate ideas when it comes to the infrastructure. For instance, instead of abandoning its old furniture and resources, AF Chandigarh opted to recycle them and create something fresh. The new library boasts of a vibrant new look and is already seeing a markedly higher footfall!
