The network of Alliances Françaises in India and Nepal is committed to promoting the works of both amateur and seasoned artists. It is in this capacity that the gallery at Alliance Française de Delhi had the distinct pleasure of hosting the exhibition “A Universe of Interconnected Experiences” by the noted contemporary artist Saba Hasan. The exhibition was inaugurated on October 28 by the Director of AF Delhi, Jean-François Ramon, and remained open to the general public till November 8. A catalogue designed by Parthiv Shah with an essay by Suneet Chopra accompanied the artwork.

As an artist, Saba has an eclectic repertoire consisting of installations, paintings, photographs, voice works, and videos. She is a keen observer of cultural factors and captures the complexity of her world with a poetic and expressionist lens. Layered with undertones, her work reveals the forces of time, nature, and personal histories in a nuanced voice. Saba‘s creations are often described as idiosyncratic and powerful and she is particularly known for her masterful draftsmanship, astute composition and skillful use of organic materials.

For “A Universe of Interconnected Experiences”, Saba presented a selection encompassing short videos, drawings, book installations, and photographs. The videos and photographs were culled from her acclaimed Bandagi Shah Itinerant Project – a chronicle of her ceaseless travelling in keeping with her family tradition of itinerant Sufism. The large charcoal drawings in the collection serve as metaphysical glimpses of encounters between the human spirit and the natural world. The works were created by the artist in Srinagar, New York, Delhi, Chicago and Goa.
