H.E. Mr. Alexandre Ziegler (Ambassador of France to India) and Mr. François Gautier (Consul General of France for the French Consulate in Bangalore) recently visited Alliance Française Hyderabad on November 5, 2017. The two dignitaries were graciously welcomed by the President of AF Hyderabad, Dr. Daphne de Rebello (IAS), along with the staff of the organisation. This occasion marked the first visit of the Ambassador to Hyderabad – the capital of Telangana and de jure capital of Andhra Pradesh.

The Ambassador spent a good two hours on the premises of AF Hyderabad and praised the organisation which is recognised as the premier institution for the promotion of French language and culture by the denizens of the city. It has existed in Hyderabad for the past 37 years and worked tirelessly towards Indo-French cultural dialogue and exchange. Since moving into the current building in 2011, the scope of partners and public has steadily increased. During the course of his visit, Mr. Ziegler interacted with the students, staff and Executive Committee of the institute.

Every year, more than 2000 students enrol for French classes and 400 appear for DELF-DALF examinations at AF Hyderabad. The institute organises about 60 cultural events which attract a footfall of atleast 5,000 people. The Resource Center has 500 active members who have access to over 5,000 documents, a gaming lounge, and digital activities. The premises of AF Hyderabad also house a Campus France office for promoting France as a top destination for higher education. It is also the seat for Bordeaux Métropole’s representative who is charged with the cooperation agreement between the Telangana Government and Bordeaux Métropole.

Whilst at AF Hyderabad, Mr. Ziegler took out time to visit the ongoing exhibition of Shaila Nambiar – a local artist whose works are currently on display in the auditorium and gallery of the institute. He presented the upcoming festival Bonjour India – a platform for innovation and creativity which will frame France’s engagement with India in different domains for the next five to ten years. An important segment of this collaborative action will take place in Hyderabad with 20 events planned in the fields of educational exchanges, cinema, digital creation, performing arts, fine arts, oenology and natural resources management. The Ambassador and the President of Alliance Française Hyderabad also officially signed a 3-year agreement between the two institutions.

Last but not the least, Mr Ziegler inaugurated the new solar panels at the rooftop of AF Hyderabad. Developing green energy is a priority for France and India as the two are the initiator countries of the Solar Alliance. After Alliance Française de Delhi, Alliance Française Hyderabad is the second Alliance in India to install these panels. The initiative was financed by a grant from the French Government and also covers a series of equipment to reinforce the security of the building. The 16 solar panels at the rooftop will cover 50% of the electricity consumption of the institute.
