As a people, Indians are no strangers to gathering over a steaming cup of tea or coffee to discuss issues which matter to them. Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad recently elevated this concept to the next level by introducing Café Philo as a regular cultural event in its café. Inspired by the model of the French philosopher Marc Sautet, a Café Philo allows people from various walks of life to discuss and exchange ideas in a serene atmosphere. The objective is to create an environment that encourages social discussions in Ahmedabad. Since the launch of the initiative a few months ago, the community has grown fast – assiduously attending sessions which take place every three weeks on Saturday evenings.

By its very nature, Café Philo aims to be an informal gathering which brings together people from different professions, age groups, and classes. Participants are encouraged to discuss philosophical ideas proposed by thinkers like Sartre, Camus, Descartes, Basho, etc. Concepts such as ‘Je pense, donc je suis’ (‘I think, therefore I am’) are elaborated upon and debated. These discussions invariably diverge into practical, social, and economical concerns with participants discussing contemporary issues and the steps one can take to make a difference. Attendees often end up dissecting these ideas for over three hours at the AF Ahmedabad Café and more often than not end up going to dinner together afterwards whilst continuing the discussion. It goes without saying that Café Philo has struck a chord with the residents of Ahmedabad and given them an avenue to engage in fruitful conversations!
