According to the celebrated cartoonist Hemant Morparia, “If journalism is supposed to be the first draft of history, then cartoons are surely its first laugh!”. It is not for nothing that comics are recognised as the Ninth Art in France. As a form of artistic expression, not only can they amuse and entertain but can also be used to critique and to make people reflect. Keeping this spirit in mind, Alliance Française de Chandigarh recently organised a Caricatures and Cartoon Festival from July 25, 2017 to Aug 15, 2017. The festival was conducted in three distinct parts – the inauguration on July 25 wherein the works of the artists Chander Malhotra and Hardit Singh were put on display, a three-day workshop from July 26 to July 28 in which participants were taught how to make their own cartoons and finally an ongoing exhibition which was an amalgamation of the initial exhibit along with the works created during the course of the workshop.

The cartoons and caricatures presented on the day of the Inauguration struck a chord with the audience as they were based on current events and personalities. Both the artists on display, the radiologist-by-profession Chander Malhotra and 11 year old Hardit Singh, were present and interacted with the audience. Over the course of the next three days, Chander Malhotra conducted workshops to enable participants to create their own cartoons and caricatures. The workshops included live drawing sessions along with insights into cartooning and illustration techniques. The works created during these three days drew inspiration from current events and were added to the exhibition. This exhibition remained on display till Aug 15 (the Independence Day of India) and culminated with a pledge to celebrate the Freedom of Expression.
