Over the years, Alliance Française de Bhopal has earned a strong reputation for promoting Arts and Crafts in the region. While the organisation has been hosting painting exhibitions in its gallery on a regular basis, August 2018 brought a breath of fresh air to the premises with the exhibit Laya which brought ceramics, poetry, and paintings under one roof. Inaugurated on Aug 28, Laya comprised of works by Nirmala Sharma (ceramic artist), Deepak Sonar (painter), and Anirudh Umat (writer).

The exhibition showcased around 10 paintings and 30 ceramics. Nirmala’s pieces are unique as she often leaves her fingerprints on her creations. Her works have previously been exhibited in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Kochi, Hyderabad, Gujarat, Bhilai, and London. She often incorporates beautiful verses and quotes in her artworks. The current show was no different as it included twelve ceramics engraved with Anirudh’s poetry. These twelve pieces were a highlight of the show especially given the fact that it opened on Anriudh’s birthday. The icing on the cake on the opening night was a recital of some poems by Anirudh himself.

Laya was kept open to the general public till September 6, 2018 and was very-well attended. It received a lot of print media coverage and attracted several poets, writers, and artists. Given the wide-scale attention that the exhibition received, Alliance Française de Bhopal hopes to organise more of such unique exhibitions for the art aficionados of the city.
