Within the framework of Bonjour India 2017-18, more than 100 programmes, events and projects will be organised in over 30 cities across India from November 2017 to February 2018. These events celebrate the linkages between France and India along with laying the groundwork for future collaborations. Figuring prominently amongst these events was the tour of Erik Truffaz and Riatsu. Truffaz is a French jazz trumpeter who is renowned globally for his compositions that are infused with elements of hip-hop, rock and electronic music. Riatsu, on the other hand, is an ambient electronic musician from Mumbai whose soundscapes range from ambient techno to dark ambient. The tour was brought to India by Gatecrash and the Alliances Françaises in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Kolkata, Goa, Bangalore and Delhi worked tirelessly to ensure that it was a success!

Born in Switzerland in 1960, Erik Truffaz discovered music at a young age thanks to his father who was a saxophonist. His compositions are often described as collages as they mix textures and atmospheres. His experimental approach to jazz is frequently compared to that of Miles Davis. In 2008, Truffaz embarked on an ambitious project, Rendez-Vous, wherein he recorded a series of albums in three cities – Paris, Mexico, Varanasi – each depicting a real encounter with local musicians. Thanks to Rendez-Vous, he was inspired to create a project for Bonjour India and partnered with Riatsu for the same. The latter has been part of the Bombay independent music circuit for over a decade and has assumed manifold roles within the scene. Riatsu composes music in a variety of genres and has played an active role in nourishing the organizational aspect of different music platforms in India.

Truffaz and Riatsu collaborated with different contemporary urban musicians for Bonjour India including Anand Bhagat (percussionist) and Neil Gomes (multi-instrumentalist) amongst others for a series of performances at the Hyderabad International Jazz Festival (Dec 3), Mumbai Royal Opera House (Dec 6 and 7), Jazzfest (Kolkata, Dec 9), International Jazz Live Festival (Goa, Dec 10), Alliance Française de Bangalore (Dec 13) and Bikaner House (Delhi, Dec 14). The performance at Mumbai included a special act with Louiz Banks, India’s very own jazz star and keyboardist. The musicians’ original compositions gave the audiences in these cities a unique look into the multifarious soundscapes of contemporary jazz!
