In tune with its commitment to nurturing local talent, Alliance Française Hyderabad recently hosted Seamless Connections – a solo show of works in acrylics and mixed-media by the expressionist artist Sabita Lakshmanan – in its gallery from March 23 to April 16. The President of AF Hyderabad, Daphne Rebello, inaugurated the show in the presence of the Guest-of-Honour Jaywant Naidu, a well-known musician.

Mrs. Rebello flagged off the evening with an eloquent speech about interconnectedness of all art forms. This introductory speech was followed by a brief presentation of the artist, her works, and the themes highlighted in the same. Lakshmanan’s artwork is essentially an outpouring on canvas of her feelings and memories. She revels in the endless possibilities of an ordinary day and is fascinated with everything that the material senses give her access to.

In their totality, Lakshmanan’s works reflect on human relationships and nature, surrealistic dreams, aspirations, and introspection. These themes are also evoked in the artist’s tome The River of Thoughts which was launched on the opening night of the exhibition. Consisting of prints, prose, and poems authored and illustrated by the artist, The River of Thoughts was released by the Chief Guest Jaywant Naidu.

The icing on the cake came in the form of a poetry presentation by the famous poet Iqbal Patni with Lakshmanan’s  artwork as the backdrop. Entitled Tasveer ki Awaz, the presentation took place on April 4 and was conceptualised as a fusion of art and poetry. Patni recited exquisitely-crafted poems with his sensuous voice with the score of Bombay softly playing in the background. This score was originally composed by Patni and sung by the legendary A R Rehman. Many famous poets like Hoshang Merchant and Saima Afreen were amongst the artists who graced the evening with their presence.
