In the pantheon of French literary giants, Marguerite Duras holds a special place. Indeed, few are the ones who can resist the delicate musicality and the sensuality of her prose. Amongst her admirers is the fellow French thespian Maud Andrieux who was in India recently for a series of performances of her solo show L’Amant which is adapted from two of Duras’ seminal novels – L’Amant (1984) and L’Amant de la Chine du Nord (1991).

Maud’s play recounts Duras’ semi-autobiographical story about a taboo love affair between a young French girl and an older, Chinese-Vietnamese man. The exquisitely layered narrative highlights the racism of the colonial era in French Indo-China (present day Vietnam). The difference between the characters’ social origins and skin colour ensures that their love story is doomed to fail. However, they are deeply touched by what they felt and reminisce about each other for the rest of their days.

The solo show ran for 90 minutes and was accompanied by an original background music by Marco Gomes to create a poetic and profound ambiance. Staged in French with English subtitles, the play enamoured audiences in six Indian cities – Chennai (Oct 25), Chandigarh (Oct 27), Pune (Oct 30), Mumbai (Nov 1), Hyderabad (Nov 3), and Kolkata (Nov 5) – thanks to a series of performances piloted by Alliance Française de Madras in collaboration with Cie du Barrage-Théâtre Marguerite Duras.
