KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival 2016
Founded in 2010, and held every year for the past six years, KASHISH is the first Indian LGBT festival to be held with the approval of the Information & Broadcasting Ministry, Government of India. The festival attracts top-tier Bollywood celebrities, filmmakers, critics and academicians from India as well as many international guests from across the world. KASHISH believes that films and art are a powerful medium to bring about social change. The festival uses the reach that it has established over the years to rally public opinion towards equality and dignity for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people.
The 7th edition of KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival will be held at three venues – Liberty Cinema (May 25-29, 2016), Alliance Française de Bombay (May 26-28, 2016) and Max Mueller Bhavan (May 26-28, 2016). AF Bombay has, in fact, been a venue for the festival almost since its very inception with screenings being held at the Theosophy Hall centre since 2011. The theme for this year is ‘7 Shades Of Love’, underlining the message that at the core of human relationships is the capacity to love each other and offer respect so that each person can live with equality and dignity.
KASHISH 2016 promises to bring the best of world-class LGBTIQ cinema, thought-provoking panel discussions, memorable performances and invaluable filmmaker interactions under one roof. KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival 2016 will screen 182 films from 53 countries. This includes around 50 films that deal with women’s and Trans* (F to M) sexualities and identities. KASHISH 2016 is presented by KASHISH Arts Foundation, organized by Solaris Pictures, co-organized by The Humsafar Trust, and powered by Wishberry.

British actor Sir Ian McKellen and Bollywood actor Sonam Kapoor inaugurated this year’s edition of the festival on Wednesday May 25 at Liberty Cinema. The KASHISH 2016 international jury comprises of National Award winning actor Rajeshwari Sachdev, popular television actor Manav Gohil, filmmaker Parvathi Balagopalan, theatre director Kaizaad Kotwal and the Festival Director of the Nuremberg International Human Rights Film Festival, Andrea Kuhn. Acclaimed actor Anupam Kher’s Actor Prepares will sponsor cash prizes for the three top competition categories.
