In the words of Lee Strasberg, “Art is longer than life … if we cannot see the possibility of greatness, how can we dream it?” Films are a medium which allow us a glimpse of this greatness – not only by creating worlds of make-believe but also through onscreen performances which have become iconic. Indeed, it is a cherished dream for many to make the big screen come alive with their nuanced portrayals. To make this dream a reality, Alliance Française de Katmandou organised a comprehensive acting workshop entitled Don’t Act, Re-Act – Actor in Front of Camera from June 19, 2017 to July 17, 2017.

The sessions were conducted by Subarna Thapa – a Director and Nepali actor of French nationality – who has previously studied at the prestigious Cours Florent in Paris. Thapa has made several films including the controversial Soongava which is the first film in 60 years of Nepal’s cinematic history to tackle the theme of same-sex relationships. The film was selected as Nepal’s entry for the Best Foreign Language Film category at the 86th Academy Awards. Don’t Act, Re-Act – Actor in Front of Camera marks the first time that Thapa has organised such a workshop. The enthusiasm of the public to attend the sessions was evident from the fact that the workshop reached maximum capacity with 15 people signing up for the same.

Structured as a 80-hour workshop conducted over several days, Don’t Act, Re-Act – Actor in Front of Camera focussed on the working process between directors and actors to help participants conceive their performance. Various aspects of this process were highlighted including how to work in front of the camera, how to create a character and how to shoot on set. Each actor was allowed to work on scenes, monologues and texts of their choice in Nepali or English. At the end of the workshop, the actors will be filmed as per shooting norms. They will be given this footage to be used as their show-reel.
