There is an oft-quoted adage which states that a picture is worth a thousand words. This is related to a phenomenon called Picture Superiority Effect wherein images are more likely to be remembered than words. It is curious then to explore the works of the artist-photographer Jean-Marc Godès whose entire artistic research is dedicated to the promotion of the repositories of words, i.e. books, through photography. Alliance Française de Delhi will have the pleasure of hosting Livres en vie – an exhibition comprising of a few unique masterpieces by this virtuoso  – from September 21, 2018 to October 1, 2018.

Godès’ photographic works are renowned internationally and are comparable to theatrical productions – with furnishings, human and animal actors, costumes, rehearsal, technical assistants et al. The images often begin as ideas on paper which then pass through several stages – constituting the team, casting, locating the perfect spot, creating the set, dressing, make-up, lights, and rehearsals – until the final shot is taken. There is no computer editing involved and the end product is often a surreal image which exists somewhere between the real and the imaginary.

Godès’ works exist at the crossroads of art, photography, poetry and literature. His photographs are known to arouse a strong desire to continue the course of stories that have been highlighted in the images. In fact, these images have often been used as points of departure for written works. His photos are frequently exhibited in France, Switzerland, Brazil, Canada, Italy, Romania, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, Finland, Lithuania, Guinea, and China. The upcoming exhibition of Godès’ photos at AF Delhi promises to provide much food for thought and is poised to draw eager crowds. The exhibition will also travel to Chennai, Hyderabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Trivandrum, and Kolkata in the coming months.
