On the occasion of Christmas, Alliance Française de Bhopal was part of the famous Tansen Music Festival. This festival offers a unique platform to many Indian as well as international artists to showcase their talent. This year, AF Bhopal invited Merope – a European music band to perform at the festival in Gwalior.

The Tansen Music Festival is a 4-day musical extravaganza . Artists and music lovers from all over the world gather here to pay tribute to the Great Indian Musical Maestro Tansen who was among the Navaratnas (nine jewels) at the court of the Mughal Emperor Jalal ud-din Akbar. The event is organized near the tomb of Tansen by the Academy of the Department of Culture, Government of Madhya Pradesh. With this year’s performace, Merope became the first international band to have participated in this prestigious event.

Merope is a world/alternative music band consisting of Jean Christophe Bonnafous (Bansuri), Indré Jurgelevičiūtė (Voice, Kanklès) and Bert Cools (Guitar and effects). Their music is inspired by ancient Lithuanian songs intertwined with organic sounds and modern harmonies and influenced by electronic music. The result is a previously unheard of alchemy of sounds as evinced by their YouTube channel.

Merope aims to create a new ritual of music for the present day by actively and effectively involving the audience in a musical journey. Their first album, ‘9 Days’, was created solely with solar power and recorded in the countryside in southern Spain. With their second album, ‘Amaranthine’, Merope dedicated the poetic textures and the sound of their inner journeys to the waters of the world. The songs were written after the Fukushima tragedy. Therefore the theme of water, peace and a future where people will be more connected and concerned with ecology and the environment runs deep in the music.

It was a pleasure to welcome these talented artists in Madhya Pradesh for a marvellous concert during the festive season. It would not be an exaggeration to add that the audience was spellbound by their music. They continued their tour of India in Bangalore, Goa and Mumbai. The performance in Mumbai was held at Alliance Française de Bombay on January 7, 2016.
