The network of Alliances Françaises in India and Nepal has the tripartite mission of teaching French, disseminating French culture and building friendly relations between the subcontinent and France. Individual Alliances often go above and beyond the call of duty to offer customised services catering to local demands. Given their expertise in the French language, it comes as no surprise that translation and interpretation are an important part of these services. The mettle of these services was recently put to the test during the 52nd Annual Assembly of the African Development Bank which took place in Gandhinagar from 22nd to 26th May. Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad provided a team of 40 interpreters as Liaison Officers for various Heads of States, Governors and Ministers from the 40 francophone countries participating in the Annual Assembly.

This is the first time that an Annual Meeting of the African Development Bank was held in India. These Meetings are the Bank’s largest annual event and serve to raise the profile of the institution on a global scale.  The role of the Liaison Officers extended beyond simply interpreting – they accompanied various Governors, Ministers and Heads of States throughout their stay at Ahmedabad and ensured that they felt comfortable. Needless to say, this was no easy task. This event marked the first time in Ahmedabad that a team of 40 French interpreters worked for the government at this scale. The team provided by AF Ahmedabad included professors, staff, and students from the institute apart from some people from the French speaking community of Gujarat. Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad left a lasting impression by providing a high quality of service at an international level. The feat will inspire many to pursue French and encourage the Francophone community in the state.
