Part of the mission of an Alliance Française is to encourage local artists by giving them a platform to showcase their work. Within this framework, Alliance française de Bhopal recently hosted Rhythm of Expression – an exhibition of ceramic sculptures by Tushar Sawant. Inaugurated on May 4, 2018 by the eminent artist Akhilesh Varma, the exhibition drew large crowds and was widely appreciated by the art aficionados of the city.

Tushar states that art allows him to express his deepest thoughts, hidden emotions, and strongest desires. His sculptures take form spontaneously and are often simple in shape and structure. By experimenting with clay and the process of creation, Tushar reflects on contemporary society. For him, humans came from the soil and will ultimately return to it as well. Hence, clay and ceramics become strongly evocative mediums for artistic expression.

Citing the example of one of his sculptures which depicts the abstract form of a woman, Tushar states that he wanted to explore the notion of sorrow. For this particular piece, he was guided by the image of a woman who is unable to feed her children on account of a drought. The texture of the sculpture is similar to the cracks and furrows which appear in the soil when there is no rain. For Tushar, the feeling or bhawana of sorrow felt by the earth is similar to the one felt by the woman. The cracked surface of the sculpture becomes an expression of this sadness.

Tushar was born in Mumbai in 1988 and obtained his BFA from Sir JJ school of Art followed by an MFA from Banaras Hindu University. He is the recipient of numerous awards and fellowships including the junior fellowship from CCRT. The success of the exhibition at Alliance Française de Bhopal can be gauged from the large number of pieces which were sold during the same. In fact, one of the visitors was so impressed that he has requested Tushar to work on a special project in Orissa about the local tribes of the region.
