Music runs in their blood – literally! The Ranganathan Trio consists of three prodigious brothers – Ravi (cello), Ajay (violin), and Théo (piano) – who have caught the fancy of the Western Classical music world. On a fortuitous day twelve years ago, the brothers of Polish-Indian descent decided to start playing as a piano trio – the Chamber Music Formation in Western Classical Music – and have never looked back. Thanks to the Alliance Française de Madras, the three brothers brought to life a selection of French Piano trios by Gabriel Urbain Fauré (1845-1924), Joseph Maurice Ravel (1875-1937), and Ernest Chausson (1855-1899) in India recently. The performances were organised in Chennai (July 11), Pondicherry (Jul 13), Pune (July 15), Calcutta (July 18), and Delhi (July 20).

The Ranganathan Trio

The Ranganathan Trio began their musical education in the Conservatory of Tours (France). They graduated in 2009 in the class of Xavier Richard with the First Prize of Chamber Music. The three brothers have gone on to pursue their Masters in different parts of Europe – Théo is in Poznan’s High Academy of Music (Poland), Ravi studies at the Royal Conservatory at Brussels (Belgium) and Ajay is in the High Conservatory of Paris (France). The three unanimously cite Vincent Coq, pianist of the famous Wanderer Trio, as an important influence. During their concerts, the brothers always present the piece’s historical context and talk about the life of the relevant composer. They focus primarily on the repertoire of the trio (from 1750 to the present) but have also explored the sonata for two instruments. Amongst other laurels, the Ranganathan Trio was the laureate of the Leopold Bellan competition in Paris and of the Chamber Music competition of Rabastens. They can be seen in action here :
