Dance is often compared to poetry in motion and is formally recognised as one of the seven major art forms in France. It is one of the most fundamental ways in which humans express themselves – an intrinsically physical language that is in a state of constant evolution like any other. To honour this art form, Alliance Française de Pune in collaboration with the French Embassy in India and Institut Français (India) recently piloted the tour of the contemporary dance performance Yama in Mumbai (April 13), Pune (April 16), Chennai (April 18), Pondicherry (April 20), Delhi (April 22) and Amritsar (April 24).

This piece is inspired by Buddhist philosophy pertaining to yoga and by the choreographer Laura Arend’s extensive travels in India. The troop which brought her vision to life on stage included Patrick Entat, Lola Mino, Olivia Caillaud and Nitsan Maragaliot. Yama is a Sanskrit word which signifies self-control, austerity, restraint and moral duty. The piece is constructed as a journey leading towards liberty and the emancipation of the self.

The performance opens with a dark world which reflects the shortcomings of daily life and the loss of the essential. It explores our reality as a mirror of our society and our lifestyles – our selfishness which causes suffering; our capacity to judge and to ignore the views of others; our covetousness which makes us desire what we cannot obtain and the bitterness that it provokes. The dance is constructed as a response to this situation – an extraordinary path to freedom, personal growth, healing and happiness.
