Récital is an extraordinary and unparalleled combination of hip-hop, violins and a talk box, a dialogue between eight dancers and a musician. In Récital, the world famous choreographer Mourad Merzouki breaks the rules of Hip-Hop, a street dance of the 70’s mainly based on acrobatic postures and free styles. He tinkers with music and dance, mixing antipodean tones and artistic influences in order to open and enrich our vision of hip-hop. Performed over 500 times all over the world, this creation instantly brought worldwide fame to Mourad Merzouki and Compagnie Käfig, the dance company he founded and  which he still directs today. On the occasion of DanSe DialogueS, the Indo-French Festival of Contemporary Dance has been initiated by the French Embassy in India and the second adaptation of Récital will be presented by Indian dancers from The Danceworx Repertory Company, founded and directed by Ashley Lobo.

A major player in the international hip-hop scene from the early 1990’s, Mourad Merzouki works at the crossroads of many different disciplines. To enhance and enrich all hip-hop styles, he adds circus, martial arts, visual arts and live music to his shows. This is not the first time that he has adapted Récital into another culture or perception of dance. In 2009, he imparted the concept of his show to Chinese dancers of the Beijing Modern Dance Company and worked with them in order to integrate the free movements of hip-hop with their classic training: “an interesting mixture” in Merzouki’s own words. He has now come to India, to New Delhi to recreate a new initiative for his famous creation.
