Actor. Dancer-Juggler. Stage Director. François Chat clearly is an artist who juggles different modes of artistic expression with equal aplomb. He describes his performances as indisciplinary – a curious play on the words interdisciplinary and indisciplined which captures the essence of his artistic creation. Much like an indisciplined pupil, François revels in the chaos of shaking the rigid categories in which artists often place themselves. The man of many talents recently captivated audiences in Chennai (Sept 28 and Oct 15), Pondicherry (Oct 1), Trivandrum (Oct 4), Panjim (Oct 6), Lucknow (Oct 8), Delhi (Oct 11) and Calcutta (Oct 13) thanks to a series of performances organised by Alliance Française de Madras.

Born in 1978 in Paris, François Chat started performing at the tender age of 10. He honed his skills at the Ecole Fratellini under the tutelage of the Juggling Professor Italo Medini. Over the years, François developed his unique style of contemporary juggling by mixing motion theatre and dance thereby created his first Clip-Clop solos with Philppe Minella in 1993 (10 minutes). In 1996, he created the L’Oeuf du Vent, an hour-long solo which he would eventually perform several times in France, Europe, India, Pakistan and Japan. In 1995, he met Bob Wilson and performed the role of young Oedipus in Silent-prologue (Oedipus-Rex, Theatre du Chatelet, 1996). Keenly aware of the importance of passing on his knowledge, François has regularly taught about stage performances at Ménagerie de verre, Fratellini, CNAC, ENC Montreal and École supérieure de théâtre – UQAM amongst other places.

For his tour in India, François Chat performed Métamorphoses (a solo juggling piece to the piano accompaniment of Philip Glass “Metamorphosis”) and Le Sacre du Printemps des Rues (a dance-juggling piece initially commissioned by the festival Le Printemps des rues in 2009). The India tour of the eclectic artist was organised with the support of DGAF India-NepalInstitut Français (India) and Oman Air as Airline Partner. The performance in Chennai was supported by Saint-Gobain as AFM Gold Sponsor, The Park (Chennai) as Hospitality Partner and as Online Partner. François Chat will also remain as an artist-in-residence at Trivandrum from Oct 16, 2017 to Nov 15, 2017.
