To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Mai 68, the Alliance Française of Chandigarh organised a series of events and activities to make its students and members aware of the importance of this historic occasion. A debate, an exhibition, movie screenings, and informal discussions were organised throughout May 2018 to commemorate the occasion. The primary aim of these events was to help the Indian public discover this aspect of French culture which is relatively unknown to them.

Understanding, Sharing, Exchanging – these were the three guiding principles for the events organised within the framework of the initiative. The AF Chandigarh team hosted several activities to make people aware of the key moments of the strike and demonstrations along with the effects that they had on everyday life. Furthermore, the exhibition Au Coeur de mai 68 by the independent photographer Philippe GRAS allowed students to better understand this crucial part of modern French history. Over the course of debates and informal exchanges of ideas, the students showed their willingness to understand and accept social evolutions.

Apart from the exhibition, AF Chandigarh also screened several films to better explain the life and times of people living in the 60s and 70s. These included Milou en Mai which recounts the daily life of a family living in the countryside and Mai 68 – un étrange printemps which is a documentary providing a glimpse into the clashes between the police and protesters.

The month culminated with a debate organised by the AF Chandigarh Library with the theme “Why Strike?”. This event gave the audience access to several newspaper articles which gave them a general idea of the prevalent French point of view at the time and ended with a warm exchange about strikes and demonstrations in India.
