The French novelist Gustave Flaubert reportedly said that travelling makes one modest as it makes people realise the tiny place they occupy in the world. Indeed, we are often told that voyages are not really about the destination but about the journey itself. On a material level, this journey might be about external landscapes but it ultimately boils down to the impressions that these sights and sounds leave behind on a person’s psyche. Alliance Française de Bangalore recently explored this very idea of travelling as a means of escape by hosting the photography exhibition Imagine France by the Sea by Maia Flore.

Armed with her camera, Maia Flore travelled the French coast from its easternmost point all the way to the West. Her journey-performance led her to 26 places which all answer, in their own specific way, the question of how to get away. Her primary frame of reference was the boundlessness of the sea. Using this notion as her point of departure, Maia twists, changes or heightens reality in her images – perhaps as a way of breaking away from its tepid rules.

Her body is her primary tool as she strives to tame the natural elements: either she disappears into the scenery, letting its colors shine, or she bravely steps forward, to earn as it were her place on the picture. Far from the studios and their predictable light and even ground, the coast is a show in and of itself: mountains edge into the sea, black sand contrasts with white beaches, surfers head into the ocean in a glorious haze of mist, winds rage on, and waves lap at cities. By deftly balancing recklessness and restraint, Maia is able to surrender to the rhythms of surroundings. The resulting series of compelling images continues to draw crowds to the exhibition which will remain on display at AF Bangalore till Sept 17, 2018.
