In tune with its commitment to bringing fresh musical acts to the general public, Alliance Française du Bengale recently hosted the debut performance of an exciting collaboration! Two Macha marks the amalgamation of the soundscapes of the mandolinist Diptanshu Roy with the lyricism of the singer-songwriter Suren Vikhash. Their unique lineup of folk songs interspersed with Kabir’s verses had audiences riveted on May 20, 2019.  The event was made possible thanks to the Siddha Foundation: Live in Series and the Calcutta Classical Guitar Society.

Diptanshu and Suren had previously met a few years ago at the Ziro Festival of Music (Arunachal Pradesh) where they had performed as a part of different bands. Inspired by each other’s musicality, they decided to collaborate and create songs with a strong social conscience. Their performance at AF Bengale comprised of songs in English, Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, and Kokborok which highlighted issues as diverse as the impact of the Green Revolution to the current water crisis. While most of the original tunes and lyrics were written and composed by Suren, some lyrics were written in collaboration with the lyricist and filmmaker CY Rathnakumar.

The duo adds that they are concentrating on creating music that is fresh, raw, and real. They firmly believe that music as an art form has a responsibility to ask questions – whether about the state of affairs in politics or the places that they inhabit. Any topic which is close to their heart, finds expression in our songs. They signed off by stating that their current focus is to create a new kind of music which can be enjoyed live!
