Exacerbated by human apathy, the world is currently facing an unprecedented environmental crisis. An increase in the Earth’s average surface temperature, changing precipitation patterns, sea level modifications, mass extinctions, and weather extremes have become the defining characteristics of the Anthropocene Era. First held in 1974, the World Environment Day has become the United Nation’s principal annual event to highlight and curb this crisis. For several years, Alliance Française du Bengale has been participating in this initiative in its own capacity to raise awareness about environmental issues.

For the 2019 edition of World Environment Day, AF Bengale organised a screening of two documentaries – namely Black Kiss and Plastic & Glass – followed by a talk by the environmental activist Mallika Jalan on June 12. Two weeks later, the organisation also screened Luc Jacquet’s documentary Il était une forêt on June 26 followed by a talk by Neela Majumdar.

Mariette Monpierre’s Black Kiss told the story of Bruno, a young fisherman who sees his livelihood being threatened by invasive seaweed and the indiscriminate use of the insecticide chlordecone.  Tessa Joosse’s Plastic & Glass offered a look into a recycling plant in the North of France. Il était une forêt invited the spectators into a never-before-seen world of natural wonder and staggering beauty as they got the chance to observe a rainforest grow right before their eyes. Drawing on a vast fund of research and knowledge, the film led viewers on a journey with the pioneering botanist and ecologist Francis Hallé into the depths of prehistoric rainforests – tropical jungles that are the very heart of life on earth.
