The heartbreaker

L’Arnacoeur or ‘Heartbreaker’ was officially released in India by Indian distributors, namely, Pictureworks . It was released on 13th January 2011 in cities across India – Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Goa, Bengaluru and Chennai. Aiming to attract a wider crowd, this French film was dubbed in English.
Supriya of Bangalore who has just watched the movie gives her perceptions for our “Indiscrétions” category.

Here are two reasons why Romain Duris and Vanessa Paradis would probably never make it big in Bollywood:
1. Bollywood stars need to be ethereally beautiful. Everyone knows that. While Duris and Paradis are good looking in a boy/girl next door sort of way, they would never bag lead roles in a Hindi film.
2. They can act. Very well. (I bet there are going to be plenty of nasty tweets from Amitabh Bachchan…)
That being said, their on-screen chemistry in the 2010 film, L’arnacoeur or Heartbreaker in English – is a treat to watch. Duris, in a departure from his usual roles as an intense, troubled young man plays Alex Lippi, who makes his living by breaking up couples by insinuating himself into their lives and causing the women to fall in love with him. He is not without principles though. He never breaks up a couple that is truly happy with each other, he never sleeps with the women he seduces and he never ever gets emotionally involved – until he is hired to split up Juliette Van Der Berck (Paradis) and her wealthy, charming and perfect fiancée, Jonathan Alcott (Andrew Lincoln).
The film is a light romantic comedy with moments of slapstick hilarity provided by Alex’s sister Melanie, her husband Marc and Juliette’s slutty best friend Sophie, played by Helena Noguerra. Overall, the film is well paced and the jokes never seem forced. It is hard not to sympathize with Alex, the bumbling Casanova, even as he breaks all his own rules in his pursuit of Juliette.
Heartbreaker will probably never feature on a list of the best movies of all time, which is not to say it isn’t entertaining. I caught it on a weekday afternoon, and was sorry to see that the auditorium was almost deserted. Even though the English dubbing was awful, I feel it deserved a larger audience.
