From six films and three countries participating last year, Europe in Amdavad is back with a new avatar having 16 countries from Europe sending a total of 19 films!

This is truly and only because the ciné-lovers of Ahmedabad! We decided to develop this events as an annual event following the huge turn out last year and the result is in front of us.” says Philippe Martin, the director of Alliance Française d’Ahmedabad. Monica Garewal, the director of Goethe Zentrum Ahmedabad, shares that “having Cinépolis as the screening venue is an additional advantage. Since it is a multiplex, we will have a proper projection setup which we lacked last year for our first edition. The films coming from Germany are quite recent and had huge success in commercial cinema.

The festival was is the first of its kind of initiative in Ahmedabad. Besides National Institute of Design (NID) and CEPT University, there are several institutes which teach film making and they always crave for such opportunities to expose their students to the European cinema. “It is a brilliant initiative. All three of us are European Cultural Centres in Ahmedabad, and collaborating on such creative projects to cater to a mass is simply enthralling. Most films in English coming to the city are Hollywood films and they rarely know the English films from the UK.” shares Mr. Dattatreya Kulkarni from the British Library.

Hemang Dave, an actor, says that it is an incredible opportunity to see the films from so many countries which is otherwise not possible in Ahmedabad. It is ‘a gift’ as these screenings are free and open to all. Raunaq Kamdar, an interior designer and film collector says that “I am complete film freak and for me, it is also an opportunity to discover other cultures, their beliefs and lifestyles through their films.”

The festival will get 12 films through the Delegation of European Union to India that were part of Delegation’s national level festival called “Europe in Love”. The Embassy of Switzerland in India has sent “Stationspiraten” in Swiss German. What else could one wish for than popcorns and sodas with back-to-back screenings in front of a big-screen!
