The network of Alliances Françaises in India and Nepal is a hotbed for cultural activity and is committed to ensuring that Art thrives in all its myriad forms. The gallery of Alliance Française de Bhopal is no exception and has been a potent platform for both upcoming and veteran artists to display their works. Recently, the AF Bhopal gallery played host to a painting exhibition entitled Introspection by Sumit Shinde – a promising young artist from Indore. The exhibition was inaugurated by by Mr. Rahul Rastogiji – Director of Bhojpuri Kala Academy, Bhopal and Deputy Director of Ustad Allauddin Khan Sangeet and Kala Academy, Bhopal.

Sumit’s father, a painter himself, encouraged his progeny’s artistic pursuits since the very beginning. It came as a surprise then that Sumit chose to pursue Interior Designing instead. In due course of time, however, the tug of the Arts proved much too magnetic and Sumit shifted his focus to a Masters in Fine Arts. In hindsight, the artist regards the time spent studying Interior Design as an asset – his abstractions resemble mapping and drawing. These works are often left untitled as Sumit wants viewers to work out their own meaning unencumbered by the limits posed by a title.

According to the artist, the forty works featured in Introspection are a visual representation of his state of mind when he paints. These paintings are a physical expression of his thoughts wherein he explores the images in his subconscious mind and gives them a form on canvas. Sumit compares the finished painting to the aerial view of a landscape wherein we see the larger patterns, forms and colours. He adds that the process of painting creates a special bond between him and the canvas – it is almost as if the two communicate until a harmony is reached. The exhibition at AF Bhopal was well appreciated by both the media and the visitors alike who came in large numbers to see the dreams of this young artist take flight!
